Buffet at Haus Hiltl

For our last night in Zürich we decided to go to a restaurant directly across the road from the hotel. We didn’t realise until we got there but it is a very famous vegetarian restaurant, which apparently has won the Guinness book of records award for the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world.

There was an extensive, nay, bewildering choice of dishes.

I didn’t want to make an ass of myself taking too many photos, the ones below are just a small selection what was available.

You can either order à la carte or have the buffet. The buffet had an interesting system of selling your food by weight. You pick up a plate, put as much food on it as you wanted, and then placed it on the weighing machine and press the button. It then spat out a document like this.

The food was priced at five Swiss francs per 100 g. The weighing machine compensated for the weight of the plate. If you wanted more you got some more on a new plate and weighed the new plate as well. This was a very fair system, because if you ate a small amount you got charged less, and if you ate a lot you got charged more.

The waiter then scanned in your slips with what looked like an iPad, and then when you are done a bill was produced.

The food was delicious, we had a couple of serves of main course, followed by dessert. (Oh yes, and some red wine).
